Brief historical notes

The construction of the Scaliger Castle dates back to the 13th century, during the rule of the Della Scala family of Verona, with the aim of defending the town from enemy incursions. The fortress was built on a promontory overlooking the lake and included towers and a wall, with dungeons for escape in case of siege. In 1383, Antonio della Scala entrusted Bonaventura Prendilacqua with the renovation of the castle, strengthening the harbour defences and creating a fortified dockyard. Despite these improvements, the castle was conquered by the Visconti in 1387, then by the Da Carrara family and finally by the Venetians in 1405. In the 16th century, the castle became the seat of the Capitano del Lago. After losing its military function, it passed to various owners, including the Counts Nuvolari and Giuseppina Arduini. In 1973 it was purchased by the Torri municipality, which restored it and turned it into a museum in 1983.

The castle towers

Today, the lemon house is a small green oasis where visitors can stroll and admire the lemon plants, as well as enjoy a spectacular view of the lake.
