Ferragosto, a beloved celebration among Italians, has ancient roots: today it is synonymous with holidays, barbecues, and fireworks, but its history goes back many centuries.
Roman origins
In 18 B.C., Emperor Ottaviano Augustus established the Feriae Augusti, a period of rest to celebrate the end of the agricultural season. It was a festive time with games, banquets, and chariot races, during which working animals were adorned and sacrifices were offered to the gods in gratitude. This pause served to recharge energies before the autumn months, turning Ferragosto into a celebration of rest and nature.
Christian transformation
With the arrival of Christianity, Ferragosto took on a new meaning linked to an important Catholic feast: August 15 became the day dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, celebrating the tradition that the Virgin Mary was taken up into heaven at the end of her earthly life. This date was partly chosen to overlap with the pagan celebrations, easing the integration of the new religion with existing customs. Thus, the festival preserved its role as a summer break, enriched by spiritual and cultural significance.
Evolution in the 20th Century
In the twentieth century, especially during the 1930s under the Fascist regime, “popular trains” were introduced to allow less wealthy families to reach the sea or mountains at affordable prices. This initiative made Ferragosto a mass celebration, symbolizing vacation and relaxation for all Italians. Today, although in different forms, August 15 remains a day of rest and festivity for most activities.
Ferragosto on Lake Garda
On Lake Garda, Ferragosto is celebrated with an authentic and welcoming atmosphere: open-air concerts, artisan markets, lakeside strolls, and relaxing moments on the beaches. The day culminates in a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky and reflects on the calm waters of the lake, a magical moment to enjoy with an aperitif or dining on local traditional dishes.
On Ferragosto, Italy comes to a stop; it is the day of the Italians. Among glasses, barbecues and good company!
