But what is Ferragosto?  A public holiday celebrated on 15 August in Italy. A time for vacation, family and friends with lots of fireworks and music on the streets. But it is an ancient tradition too, which dates from the year 18 BC when Emperor Augustus created a holiday, “Feriae Augusti”, to provide a period of rest, called Augustali, which was felt necessary after the hard labour of the previous weeks. Besides its pagan roots, Catholicism also has to do with Ferragosto, because August 15 is Assumption Day, or the day when the Virgin Mary ascended to heaven.
