HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL OUTLINE
Garda Lake, or Benaco, is the largest of the Italian Lakes with its expanse of about 370 kmsq. It is situated between Lombardia (from where it passes through Brescia), the Veneto (in particular the province of Verona) and Trentino-Alto Adige (where it joins the province of Trento). There are many towns on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda which offer the enjoyment of their panoramas, such as Peschiera del Garda, Castelnuovo del Garda, Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Brenzone, Malcesine and, of course, Torri del Benaco.
The freshwater and tectonic lake takes on the actual shape of the glacier that created it. Glacial movements formed the impressive mountain amphitheatre around the Southern part of the lake, while the geography of the Northern region is due to the floods with which the Sarca River covered the area above Riva thereby creating the Arco basin.
The climate of Garda Lake has ensured that it has become an important international tourist destination, in fact the Benaco area has always been particularly receptive to tourism thanks to the presence of a complete network of infrastructures which range from transport to cultural entertainment and health & well-being (for example the numerous thermal spring parks, the sport and hot spring centres – easily reached from the residence).
Furthermore, the local climate is ideal for the cultivation of Mediterranean plants such as olives, grapes, citrons and lemons: in fact, olive trees, grapevines and lemon trees are characteristic of the lovely lake villages and constitute both some of the most famous resources of the area, and the starting point (together with the historical activity of fishing for alborelle or local anchiovies) for the numerous cultural initiatives and festivals which continue throughout the year in the towns of Garda.
Garda Lake has always fascinated its visitors with its stunning views and romantic history, much of which is included in operas such as Eneide or The Devine Comedy: Residence Ca' del Lago tries to evoke for its guests the magical atmosphere of the past with apartments which have been specifically created to allow the utmost appreciation of the magical view of the town of Torri del Benaco.
Torri del Benaco is about 38 kilometres from Verona and is situated on the final slopes of Mount Baldo (it is in fact part of the Montana Borough of Mount Baldo, as well as part of the Borough of Garda). Historically, Torri’s business centre is located in its port: here you find some of the most typical buildings of the town. Firstly, Scaligero Castle, built at the end of 300AD by Antonio della Scala on an old structure dating back to the Roman fortification during the 10th century. The castle hosts an interesting ethnographic museum, the first SALA of fresh-water fishing in Italy and one of the Gardesana region’s first citrus greenhouses, erected in the mid -700’s (for a long time, the "limonàra" of Torri represented the world’s most northern region in which lemons were cultivated, until the decline of this type of cultivation in the ‘900’s). Other interesting buildings are the 4th century Gardesana building, The Watch Tower and the parochial church.
